Keep your golf cart windshield clear and scratch-free with a simple care routine for tinted and clear acrylic panels, plus the cleaning steps that actually protect them.

Quick answer

Clean your golf cart windshield with a pH-neutral soap, plenty of water, and a soft microfiber cloth, and never wipe a dry panel. Tinted acrylic hides fine scratches better than clear, but both need the same gentle routine to stay readable and crack-free.

Why clear and tinted acrylic need different cleaning habits

Clear acrylic shows every swirl mark and dust speck, so it rewards a slower, rinse-first approach. Tinted acrylic hides fine scratches but can show streaks and water spots more readily because the darker surface reflects light. That means your cleaning method should change with the panel, not just the product label.

Both GCSTM windshields use 3/16-inch impact-resistant acrylic, which is tough against road debris but still soft enough to scratch from grit trapped in a cloth. The tint itself is not a coating you can scrub; treat the whole panel as one delicate surface.

The one product that changes your routine

If your cart has a folding windshield, the hinge and strut area collects grit that drops onto the panel when you fold it. Wiping the inside of a folded windshield without rinsing the hinge first is a common way to drag sand across the acrylic. Unfold fully and flush the hinge with water before cleaning either side.

Step-by-step windshield care routine

  1. Rinse off loose grit first: Use a hose or a bucket of clean water to flush dust and sand from the windshield before touching it. Start at the top and work down so dirty water does not run over clean areas. Never skip the rinse; dry wiping is the fastest way to grind scratches into acrylic.
  2. Wash with pH-neutral soap and a soft mitt: Add a small amount of car-wash soap or mild dish soap to water and wipe gently with a clean microfiber mitt or sponge. Avoid circular motions; use straight passes. Do not use paper towels, which can trap grit and leave lint.
  3. Clean the tinted side with extra care: For a tinted windshield, use the same soap solution but rinse more often. Tinted acrylic shows streaks, so keep the mitt clean and avoid letting soap dry on the surface. If you see a rainbow sheen, rinse again; dried soap can etch the tint over time.
  4. Dry with a clean microfiber cloth: Use a separate dry microfiber towel and blot or wipe in one direction. Do not let the windshield air-dry, which leaves water spots that are harder to remove later. Keep one microfiber towel just for the windshield and wash it separately from gritty shop rags.
  5. Remove stubborn spots without scrubbing: For bug splatter or bird droppings, soak a microfiber cloth in soapy water and lay it on the spot for a minute, then wipe gently. Never use a scraper, razor blade, or abrasive pad. If a spot will not lift with soaking, it may be etched; polishing risks making it worse.
  6. Check and tighten folding hardware: On a folding windshield, inspect the hinge, strut, and bolts monthly. Loose hardware lets the panel vibrate, which can cause cracks at the mounting holes. A rattle at speed is a warning sign; tighten before the next ride.
