Step-by-step instructions for installing a Jake's 3" spindle lift on a 1994.5-2001.5 EZGO TXT or Medalist gas golf cart. Avoid common mistakes and get a safe, level lift.
Quick Answer
Installing a Jake's 3" spindle lift on your 1994.5-2001.5 EZGO TXT or Medalist gas cart raises the front end for larger tires and better ground clearance. Follow these steps carefully to avoid steering and alignment issues.
What This Lift Does for Your Gas EZGO
A spindle lift replaces the front steering knuckles with taller units, raising the cart's front end by 3 inches. This gives you room for larger tires and improves off-road capability without altering the rear suspension. The Jake's kit is designed specifically for older gas TXT and Medalist models (1994.5-2001.5) with a 3-bolt steering shaft flange, so fitment is precise.
Tools and Prep Work
You'll need a floor jack, jack stands, a torque wrench, a set of metric and standard sockets (10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 15mm, 1/2", 9/16"), a ball joint separator or pickle fork, penetrating oil, and a pry bar. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Apply penetrating oil to all suspension bolts a few hours before starting.
Installation Steps
- 1. Remove Front Wheels and Brake Hardware: Jack up the front of the cart and place jack stands under the frame. Remove the front wheels. Unbolt the brake calipers and hang them out of the way with zip ties—do not let them dangle by the brake line. Common mistake: letting the caliper hang can damage the brake line. Always support it.
- 2. Disconnect Steering and Suspension: Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the lower ball joint. Use a ball joint separator to pop the spindle free from the control arm. Then remove the two bolts securing the steering knuckle to the strut assembly. Slide the spindle off. If the ball joint is stubborn, use penetrating oil and a hammer on the knuckle—not on the ball joint stud.
- 3. Install the New Spindle: Position the new Jake's spindle onto the control arm and strut. Hand-tighten the ball joint nut and the two knuckle bolts. Torque the ball joint nut to 45 ft-lb and the knuckle bolts to 55 ft-lb. Reinstall the brake caliper and wheel. Do not fully torque until both sides are assembled—this lets you align the steering later.
- 4. Repeat on the Other Side and Adjust Toe: Complete the same process for the passenger side. With both wheels on the ground, measure the distance between the front and rear of the front tires. Adjust the tie rods until the front measurement is 1/8" less than the rear (toe-in). Tighten the tie rod lock nuts. Skipping the toe adjustment causes rapid tire wear and wandering steering.
- 5. Check Clearance and Test Drive: Turn the steering full lock left and right. Confirm no tire rubbing on the frame, brake lines, or suspension. Take a slow test drive, then re-torque all suspension bolts after 20 miles. Common mistake: forgetting to re-torque after settling. Loose bolts can cause clunking or failure.
