A step-by-step golf cart light kit install for Club Car, E-Z-GO, and Yamaha, covering headlight wiring, switch placement, grounds, and LED bulb upgrades.

Quick answer

Mount the lights first, then run the harness, then tie power and ground to the battery pack or a fused 12V source. Keep every connection clean, dry, and tight. On Club Car, E-Z-GO, and Yamaha the sequence is the same; only the mounting points and switch location change. If your cart already has halogen housings, you can often skip the full kit and upgrade the bulbs instead.

A light kit is one of the few upgrades that changes how you use a golf cart. It turns a daytime-only machine into something you can run at dusk, in the neighborhood, or on a trail after the sun drops. The install itself is not complicated, but it does reward patience. Most failures come from rushed wiring, not from the lights.

This guide walks through the install in order, from planning to first test. It works for Club Car, E-Z-GO, and Yamaha carts, with notes on where the three brands differ. If you already have a halogen kit installed, read the bulb section before you buy anything new.

Before you start: plan the circuit

Decide where power comes from before you touch a tool. On a gas cart, you are working with a 12V battery, so the kit wires directly. On an electric cart, you either tap the full pack through a voltage reducer or use a separate 12V accessory battery. A reducer is the cleaner choice because it keeps the lights from draining one battery in the pack unevenly.

Check what the kit includes. Most kits ship with a harness, switch, and mounting hardware. Some include a fuse or relay; some do not. If yours does not, add an inline fuse rated for the kit's draw. This is cheap insurance and it makes future troubleshooting much easier.

  • Confirm your cart's voltage and whether it is gas or electric before ordering anything.
  • Lay the harness out on the floor and match each connector to a light before mounting.

Mount the lights and the switch

Start at the front. Headlights typically mount into the cowl or a pre-cut bezel, and tail lights mount at the rear of the body or on the rear seat frame. Hand-tighten the hardware first so you can still shift the housing if the beam aims too high or too low. Tighten everything down only after the harness reaches each light without stretching.

For the switch, pick a spot you can reach from the driver's seat without looking down for long. A dash cutout is ideal, but a bracket works fine on carts without one. Drill the pilot hole slightly smaller than the switch body, then open it up gradually. Oversized holes are the most common dash mistake and they are hard to hide.

  • Route the harness along the frame, away from hot exhaust parts and moving suspension.
  • Leave a small service loop at each light so vibration does not pull on the connector.

Wire the headlights and grounds

Connect the headlight leads to the harness first, then run the harness back to the switch and power source. Keep positive and ground paths separate and label them if the colors are ambiguous. A poor ground is the number one cause of dim lights, flickering, or one side working and the other not.

Ground to a clean metal point on the frame rather than to a painted surface or another accessory's ground wire. Scrape the paint back to bare metal, use a star washer, and coat the connection with dielectric grease. If your cart has a factory ground bus, use it.

  • Test each light individually before you button up the dash.
  • Do not splice into an existing accessory circuit unless you know its fuse rating.

Upgrade to LED bulbs if you already have halogen housings

If your cart already has a halogen light kit, you may not need a full replacement. The Golf Cart LED Bulb Upgrade Set (2 Bulbs) is designed to fit most halogen golf cart light kits using the existing housings. It includes a pair of 35W COB LED bulbs with an 881 base, and the same base family covers 886, 889, 894, 896, and 898.

The draw difference is the reason to switch. A standard 37W halogen bulb pulls 2.5 amps, while each 35W LED bulb pulls about 0.55 amps. On an electric cart that matters because you are asking less from the pack and the reducer. On a gas cart it matters because the charging system has more headroom for other accessories.

  • Check your existing bulb base before ordering; the 881 family is not universal.
  • LEDs run cooler, which is easier on older plastic housings.

Test, aim, and seal

Reconnect the battery and test low beam, high beam, and any running lights. If a light does not come on, check the ground first, then the connector, then the switch. Once everything works, aim the headlights so the beam lands on the road ahead without blinding oncoming drivers. A wall at roughly 25 feet is enough to see the pattern.

Finish by sealing every connection you exposed. Dielectric grease on the connectors, and a small dab of silicone on any hole you drilled through the body. Water finds its way into dashes and cowls, and a sealed install lasts far longer than a dry one.

  • Re-check all mounting hardware after the first ride; vibration loosens things.
  • Keep the fuse accessible so a future fault is a two-minute fix.

Light kit install steps

  1. Plan power and confirm voltage: Identify gas or electric, choose a voltage reducer or 12V accessory battery on electric carts, and confirm the kit's fuse or relay requirement. Checkpoint: you should know exactly which wire gets power and which gets ground before drilling anything.
  2. Mount the headlights and tail lights: Fit housings loosely, route the harness to each light without stretching, then tighten hardware once the harness reaches every connection. Common mistake: over-tightening early and cracking a plastic bezel or cowl.
  3. Install the switch: Drill a pilot hole smaller than the switch body and open it gradually in a dash location you can reach from the seat. Common mistake: an oversized dash hole that leaves the switch loose and rattling.
  4. Wire positives and grounds: Connect headlight leads to the harness, run the harness to the switch and power source, and ground to clean bare metal with a star washer and dielectric grease. Common mistake: grounding to paint or another accessory's ground, which causes dim or flickering lights.
  5. Test each light before reassembly: Reconnect the battery and check low beam, high beam, and running lights one at a time before closing up the dash. Checkpoint: if one side fails, check ground first, then connector, then switch.
  6. Aim and seal: Aim the beam against a wall at about 25 feet, then apply dielectric grease to connectors and silicone to any drilled holes. Next step: re-check hardware after the first ride and keep the fuse accessible.

Products that fit this install

  • Golf Cart LED Bulb Upgrade Set (2 Bulbs): Fits most halogen golf cart light kits using existing housings; includes a pair of 35W COB LED bulbs with an 881 base, and the same base family covers 886, 889, 894, 896, and 898. A standard 37W halogen bulb draws 2.5 amps, compared to about 0.55 amps per 35W LED bulb. If you already have halogen housings, this is the lowest-effort way to get brighter, cooler-running lights without replacing the whole kit.
  • Golf Bag Attachment For MadJax® Genesis 250/300 Rear Seats: Designed to fit MadJax Genesis 250/300 rear seats with an easy on/off quick mount, durable black powder-coated hardware, and a lower retention strap. If your light kit install includes rear-seat wiring, this attachment keeps bags secure without interfering with tail light placement.

A light kit install is mostly about order and patience: plan the circuit, mount first, wire second, test before you close anything up. Do that and the lights will work the first time and keep working through weather and vibration. If you already have halogen housings, start with the LED bulb upgrade before replacing the whole kit.
