Step-by-step guide to installing the Instamatic LED light kit on Yamaha G14, G16, G19, and G22 gas or electric golf carts. Includes common mistakes to avoid.

Quick answer

Installing the Instamatic LED light kit on your Yamaha G14-G22 is a straightforward DIY job. The kit includes pre-wired headlights, tail lights, a switch, and a harness, and fits both gas and electric models. Follow the steps below to get it done in about an hour.

Before you start: Confirm your Yamaha model

This kit fits Yamaha G14, G16, G19, and G22 models only. If you're unsure which model you have, check the serial number plate under the seat or near the battery compartment. The kit works with both gas and electric carts, but the wiring routing may differ slightly.

Tools you will need

You'll need a Phillips screwdriver, a 10mm socket or wrench, wire strippers, electrical tape or heat shrink, and a drill with a 1/2-inch bit for the switch hole. A plastic trim tool helps avoid scratching the body.

Installation steps

  1. 1. Disconnect the battery: Disconnect the negative battery terminal before any wiring work. This prevents shorts and accidental activation. Common mistake: Forgetting to disconnect the battery can blow a fuse or damage the LED driver.
  2. 2. Mount the headlights: Use the included templates to mark the headlight cutout locations on the front cowl. Drill pilot holes and cut carefully with a hole saw or jigsaw. Insert the headlights and secure with the provided screws. Check that both lights are level before tightening fully.
  3. 3. Install the tail lights: Remove the existing tail light lenses or access the rear body panel. Mount the LED tail lights using the supplied brackets and screws. Route the wires toward the front along the frame rail. Common mistake: Pinching wires under the body panel – use zip ties to keep them clear.
  4. 4. Route the wiring harness: Lay the main harness along the frame from front to back. Connect the headlight and tail light plugs. Secure the harness with zip ties every 12-18 inches, avoiding hot exhaust areas on gas models. On gas carts, keep wires away from the muffler and engine heat shield.
  5. 5. Install the switch: Drill a 1/2-inch hole in a convenient spot on the dash or lower cowl. Insert the push/pull switch and connect the harness pigtail. Tighten the retaining nut. Position the switch where you can reach it easily but not accidentally bump it.
  6. 6. Connect power and test: Connect the red wire to the battery positive terminal and the black wire to the negative terminal (or a chassis ground). Reconnect the battery, turn on the switch, and test all lights – headlights, amber markers, and tail lights. If lights don't work, check the ground connection and fuse first. The kit includes a fuse in the harness.
